The short answer: RIA in a Box does not publish a price. It bills a monthly fee per user for its compliance service and for its cybersecurity platform, a monthly service fee, and a one-time implementation fee. The only public numbers are discounts: SEI's partner sheet gives 10% off the per-user fee and waives implementation. For a five-person advisory firm, the headcount you license and the cybersecurity add-on move the bill more than anything else.

Every review of RIA in a Box ends with "schedule a demo". That is true, but it leaves you walking into the call with no idea which levers exist. This page lays out how the bill is built, what can be negotiated, and what the tools advisers compare it with actually cost, with every figure dated. If you are still deciding what category of tool you need, start with RIA compliance software, which maps the three jobs RIA tools do.

How much does RIA in a Box cost?

RIA in a Box, which has sold as COMPLY RIA since 2022, quotes every firm individually. The structure of the quote is not secret, though. SEI's strategic partner sheet for RIA in a Box, published in 2024, names four lines: a monthly per-user fee for the Compliance Service, a monthly per-user fee for the Cybersecurity Platform, a monthly service fee, and an implementation fee. Those are the four numbers to ask for, separately, on the first call.

Historically RIA in a Box sold four tiers to SEC-registered advisers (Comprehensive, Premium, Advanced and Standard) and three to state-registered advisers (Comprehensive, Premium and Standard). SmartAsset's review, updated in January 2026, says it could not confirm whether those tiers still exist. In practice the tier decides how much consulting time comes with the software, which is the part that varies most between firms.

Line on the quote How it is billed What to ask
Compliance ServiceMonthly, per userWho counts as a user: every employee, only access persons, or only people who log in?
Cybersecurity PlatformMonthly, per userIs it required, or can you keep your current IT provider and drop it?
Service feeMonthlyWhat consulting hours does it buy, and do unused hours roll over?
ImplementationOne timeCan it be waived? SEI clients get it waived, so it is negotiable.

Does RIA in a Box offer discounts?

Yes, and the custodian channel is where they show up in writing. SEI's partner sheet lists 10% off the monthly per-user fee for both the Compliance Service and the Cybersecurity Platform, the service fee waived for the first month, and the implementation fee waived. Custodians negotiate these arrangements for their advisers as a group, so before you take a direct quote, ask your custodian's practice management team whether it has one.

The discount also tells you something useful. A vendor only waives an implementation fee through a partner if the fee is soft to begin with. Treat it as a point you can win directly too.

Is RIA in a Box the same as COMPLY?

Effectively, yes. RIA in a Box joined COMPLY in 2021 and moved to the COMPLY RIA brand in 2022. The same SEI sheet lists the rest of the COMPLY portfolio: ComplySci (personal trading and code of ethics), NRS, illumis and ITEGRIA, which supplies the managed IT and virtual desktop behind the cybersecurity offer. That matters for pricing, because a COMPLY rep can bundle several of these. Bundles hide the unit price of each piece, so ask for the line items even if you take the bundle.

What does RIA in a Box include?

It is a mix of software and people. The software side covers a compliance calendar and task tracking, policy and procedure templates, code of ethics and personal trading workflows, and registration and Form ADV support. The people side is consulting from COMPLY's compliance staff, which is the part most small firms are really paying for when the founder is also the chief compliance officer.

What it is not is a communications archive. Books and records under Rule 204-2 still need an email and text capture tool, which is a separate purchase from a separate vendor category.

What does RIA compliance software cost from other vendors?

Almost nobody in RIA compliance publishes a price, so the comparison has to come from marketplaces and recorded contracts. These were read on 30 September 2026.

Vendor Main job What is public
RIA in a Box (COMPLY)Compliance program, consulting, cybersecurityNo price; monthly per-user fees plus service and implementation fees
ComplySci (COMPLY)Personal trading, code of ethicsNo price; Vendr has no recorded contracts
SmartriaTasks, attestations, marketing review"Customized pricing" by firm size, demo only
SmarshArchiving and supervisionVendr median $22,759 a year ($3,288 to $131,276); AWS Marketplace lists a $25,000 annual platform minimum for Cloud Capture, plus per-user fees
Global RelayArchiving and supervisionVendr median $6,793 a year ($975 to $7,800)
ComplianceOfficerRule change tracking, policy gaps, annual review record$149 a month or $894 a year for the firm, published

Two things jump out. First, per-user pricing punishes growth: every new hire who counts as a user raises the compliance bill, whether or not their work changes your compliance risk. Second, the archive is often the largest single line in an RIA's compliance budget, and it is a different product. Comparing RIA in a Box with Smarsh is comparing a consultant with a filing cabinet.

What is a cheaper alternative to RIA in a Box?

Start by listing which parts of RIA in a Box you actually use. Many small advisers buy it for the consulting in year one, when they register, and keep paying for it in year four, when what they really use is the calendar and the policy templates. At that point three cheaper setups are common.

  • Rule tracking plus an archive. A regulatory monitor that tells you when the SEC or your states change something and maps it to your manual, next to an archive for email and text. This is where ComplianceOfficer fits, at $149 a month with a flat price for the firm.
  • Outsourced CCO by the hour. If the consulting is what you value, an independent compliance consultant billed for the annual review and exam prep can cost less than a monthly retainer.
  • Code of ethics tool only. Firms with many access persons often keep a personal trading tool and drop the rest.

Small firms also tend to overlook the unglamorous items. The Marketing Rule and your Form ADV disclosures reach your email, so a standard disclosure line in every adviser's company-wide email signature is cheaper to enforce once than to audit person by person.

What to have ready before the RIA in a Box pricing call

You get a better quote when you walk in knowing your own numbers. Bring these.

  1. Your headcount split three ways: total staff, access persons under your code of ethics, and people who will actually log in. Ask which one they bill on.
  2. Your registration status (SEC or state) and the number of states where you make notice filings, since that changed the tier historically.
  3. Your current IT and cybersecurity setup, so you can decline the cybersecurity platform if it duplicates what you already pay for.
  4. Your custodian's partner discounts, in writing.
  5. The renewal terms you will accept: term length, notice window and the cap on price increases.

Regulatory costs are small next to software. The SEC's IARD fee for an annual updating amendment is $40, $150 or $225 depending on assets under management. The expensive part of compliance is the hours, which is why tools that cut the time spent watching for rule changes pay back fastest. How we price that is on our pricing page, and how the wider compliance software market prices is on compliance software pricing.

Where ComplianceOfficer fits for an RIA

We do one part of what RIA in a Box does, and we do it daily. ComplianceOfficer reads SEC releases, FinCEN rules and state securities notices at the source, adds each change that affects advisers to your register, flags the policy it touches and drafts the update. Every review and sign-off is logged, which is the record the SEC's 2026 exam priorities say examiners check when they look at your annual review. The scan at the top of this page is preset to investment advisers, and the adviser rules we track are laid out on RIA compliance software. If you run a compliance manual across several people, policy management software covers the attestation side.
