The short answer: Workiva costs less to enter and MetricStream costs more per module, but neither publishes a rate card, so the comparison rests on records. Vendr shows a Workiva median of about $50,000 a year. MetricStream lists $60,000 a year per module on AWS Marketplace (sold on a 36-month term) and a state office paid $139,325 for a one-year renewal with services. Both sell by quote, so treat these as questions to ask rather than prices to expect.
We read the figures below on 8 and 29 October 2026 from AWS Marketplace, MetricStream's own subscription agreement, public contract notices and Vendr. Where a number mixes software with services we say so, and where we found nothing we say that too.
Workiva vs MetricStream pricing at a glance
| Item | Workiva | MetricStream |
|---|---|---|
| Published price list | None | None. metricstream.com/pricing returns a 404 |
| AWS Marketplace | No listing we could use | CyberGRC Prime and ESGRC Prime, $180,000 each for 36 months, or $60,000 a year |
| Recorded contracts | Vendr median about $50,000, range $12,811 to $153,365, 167 purchases, buyers saved 11% on average | No Vendr page and no US federal prime awards. Illinois Attorney General renewal $139,325.26 for one year |
| Renewal terms | Negotiated per order form | Fixed 6% increase each renewal term, automatic one-year renewals, 90-day notice |
| Heritage | Document-first reporting (10-K, XBRL, linked data) | Enterprise GRC modules for risk, IT, audit, compliance and vendor risk |
Workiva's Vendr count has shifted between reads, so quote the median and range rather than the number of purchases. Earlier reads on this site showed $49,420, and the 29 October read shows $50,000, which is the same story within rounding.
How much does MetricStream cost compared with Workiva?
MetricStream's only public list price sits on AWS Marketplace, where CyberGRC Prime and ESGRC Prime are each $180,000 for 36 months. That is $60,000 a year per module, and the listing is non-refundable. A bank that wants IT risk, internal audit and regulatory compliance is buying three products, and the card prices only two of them. Our MetricStream pricing breakdown has the full listing and contract history.
Workiva's price depends on which products you turn on, how many users and entities are in scope, and how many filings you produce. The recorded range runs from $12,811 to $153,365, which is a twelvefold spread. The median near $50,000 is a fair test for a mid-size SOX and reporting purchase, and a quote far above it should come with a written scope. The Workiva pricing page sets out what moves a quote.
Which is better for SOX compliance, Workiva or MetricStream?
Neither is better in general. Workiva is document-first: it grew out of the 10-K, XBRL tagging and linked data, so it is strongest where the finance team assembles and ties out the reporting package and wants SOX evidence next to it. MetricStream is module-first: a risk or internal audit function that runs IT risk, compliance and vendor risk programs on one platform gets a broader enterprise footprint.
The honest tiebreaker is organizational. Whoever has the tool open most hours of the week should choose it, because the losing team keeps its spreadsheets. If the controller owns SOX and the 10-K, start with Workiva. If a chief risk officer owns a multi-program GRC roadmap, start with MetricStream and price every module. For a wider shortlist, see SOX compliance software and the SOX compliance software pricing comparison.
What does renewal cost with each vendor?
MetricStream publishes its Cloud Subscription Agreement, and clause 3.2 is plain: order forms renew automatically for one-year terms unless either side gives notice at least 90 days before the end, and the fees for each subsequent term rise by 6% over the preceding term. That is a fixed step, not a ceiling. A $100,000 subscription becomes $106,000 at the first renewal and $126,248 by year five.
Workiva does not publish its master terms in the same way, so the renewal increase is whatever your order form says. Ask for it as a number. A 90-day notice window is easy to miss, so put the dates in a contract calendar, a job that contract management software handles better than a shared spreadsheet.
How should I negotiate Workiva or MetricStream?
- Get the billable unit. Users, entities, modules, filings or seats. Ask for the counting rule in the order form.
- Price the same scope twice. A two-module and a five-module program differ more than the two vendors do.
- Cap the renewal. Ask for a number, and ask whether adding a module resets the terms.
- Separate services. The Illinois figure includes professional services, so do not compare it with a software-only median.
- Plan the exit. MetricStream returns data within 20 business days on an encrypted drive you supply, and migration is billed at its then current services rates. Ask Workiva for the equivalent in writing.
Where ComplianceOfficer fits next to either platform
Neither Workiva nor MetricStream is built to watch the regulators. Teams that own SOX, BSA/AML or privacy obligations still need to know the day a rule changes and which policy it touches. ComplianceOfficer checks the primary US sources daily against your register of obligations, explains each change in plain language, drafts the policy update for each gap and keeps a dated audit trail. It costs $149 a month for one owner and $298 for up to three people, listed on our pricing page.
Questions buyers ask
Is Workiva or MetricStream cheaper?
On the public record Workiva is cheaper to start. Vendr shows a Workiva median of about $50,000 a year across 167 purchases, while MetricStream lists $60,000 a year per module on AWS Marketplace on a 36-month term and one state renewal ran $139,325. Scope decides the final bill, so compare quotes on the same modules.
Does MetricStream or Workiva publish pricing?
Neither publishes a rate card. metricstream.com/pricing returns a 404 and Workiva sells by quote. MetricStream does list two modules on AWS Marketplace at $180,000 for 36 months each. Workiva has no equivalent listing, so its figures come from recorded Vendr contracts.
Which is better for SOX compliance, Workiva or MetricStream?
Workiva suits finance teams that live in the 10-K and want linked reporting and SOX in one document-first platform. MetricStream suits a risk or internal audit function running several GRC programs on one enterprise platform. Choose by who owns the tool most hours of the week.
How much do MetricStream renewals increase?
MetricStream's published Cloud Subscription Agreement raises the fees for each renewal term by 6 percent over the previous term and renews automatically for one-year terms unless notice is given 90 days before the end. A $100,000 subscription becomes $126,248 by year five.
What should I negotiate with either vendor?
Get the billable unit in writing, the renewal increase as a number, the notice window for non-renewal, and a priced module list. Price the same scope with both vendors, since the gap between a two-module and a five-module program is larger than the gap between the vendors.
